Know what you are buying

How to tell a good fence from a cheap one

Most of what decides whether a fence lasts is invisible on the day it goes up. Here is what to look for in any quote, including ours.

01

Post depth

Posts need to sit around 600mm into the ground, set in concrete. Shallow posts are why fences lean after the first wet winter.

02

Gravel boards

A strip of concrete or treated board at ground level keeps the fence panels out of the wet soil. Panels that touch the ground rot from the bottom up.

03

Treated timber

Pressure-treated wood resists rot from the inside. Paint on untreated wood only hides the problem for a season.

04

A string line

Simple, and the difference between a run that looks right from every angle and one that wanders. If the fitter does not use one, that tells you something.

How it works

Three steps, no chasing

You always know what happens next, and what it costs, before it happens.

Tell us the job

A message or a call. A photo of the garden helps, a rough idea is enough.

We measure it properly

Ground, levels, access. Then one fixed price, in writing.

We build it and clear up

The only sign we were there is the fence.

Questions

The things people ask first

How much does a new fence cost?

It depends on length, height and the ground. Most garden runs land between a few hundred pounds for repairs and a few thousand for a full replacement with concrete posts. You get a fixed written price before we start, so the number never moves after the work begins.

How high can my fence be without planning permission?

In most back and side gardens the limit is 2 metres. Next to a road or public path at the front it drops to 1 metre. Trellis on top counts towards the height. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, different rules apply. This gets checked before anything is built.

Which side of the fence do I own?

There is no automatic rule in the UK, whatever the neighbours say. Your title deeds are what counts. If the deeds are silent, the side the posts face is often a clue, and a friendly word with your neighbour before work starts saves trouble later.

Do I need to tell my neighbour?

Legally, usually not, if the fence is on your land and within height limits. A quick heads-up still avoids bad blood, and fitting can be done entirely from your side so nobody else’s garden is disturbed.

How long does a fence last?

Treated timber panels on concrete posts usually give 20 years or more. Timber posts are always the first thing to fail because they sit in wet ground. That is why concrete posts and gravel boards are worth the extra where the budget allows.

How long will the work take?

A typical garden run is a day or two including taking the old fence away. Long runs or tricky access take longer, and you get told that before the job starts, not during it.

What happens to the old fence?

It leaves with us. Removal and disposal are part of the quote, and the garden is left swept.
